The rank tracking metrics that actually matter

Aug 21, 2026 · 4 min read

Average position lies. Here's the small set of numbers that tell you if your SEO is really working.

Average position is the most quoted and most misleading number in SEO. A jump from rank 40 to rank 11 on a high-volume query and a drop from 3 to 2 on a tiny one can net out to a 'flat' average. Here are the metrics that don't lie.

1. Clicks by query trend

Clicks are the ground truth. Track them per query, not just in aggregate — aggregate clicks hide the queries that are growing (double down there) and the ones decaying (fix or retire).

2. Position on your money queries

You don't rank for 'everything' — you rank for a handful of queries that drive revenue. Track the position trend for those specifically. Top-3 movement on five money queries is worth more than any site-wide average.

3. Impression share vs. click share

If impressions grow but clicks don't, your snippet or intent is off. If clicks grow while impressions are flat, your CTR improved — usually a title or answer-first win. The gap between the two tells you which problem you have.

4. AI citation rate

In an AI-search world, appearing in the answer is a ranking. Track the share of your buyer prompts where you're cited, per engine. A falling citation rate is the earliest warning that a competitor is out-executing you — before Google rankings move at all.
