Citations are not mentions: why we split the numbers
Sep 29, 2026 · 4 min read
A brand named in an AI answer is awareness; a brand page used as a source is a citation. OrbitRank GenO now scores both separately on every engine — live and estimated alike.

Most AI-visibility tools report one blended number: 'your brand appeared in X% of answers'. That number hides the difference between being recommended and being sourced — and the difference is where the leverage is.
Citation: your page is the source
A citation is when an AI engine relies on your page as a source of its answer. The engine fetched your content and used it. This is the strongest visibility signal — the recommendation carries your facts, your phrasing, your link.
Mention: your brand is in the answer text
A mention is when the engine names or recommends your brand in the answer without citing your page. Buyers hear your name — real awareness — but the claims are attributed to the engine's general knowledge or someone else's source. Mentions usually lead citations: engines recommend what they eventually learn to source.
Scored separately, on every engine
OrbitRank GenO now records cited, mention-only or absent for every prompt on every engine — live API checks on Perplexity and ChatGPT verify it literally, and estimated engines are web-researched and always labeled. The citation scoreboard shows citation rate and mention rate side by side, and per-engine citation runs carry the same split.
Why it matters for the fix loop
The split tells you which fix to run. Mention-only means you're in the conversation but your page isn't the source — build the answer-first money page the engine can quote. Absent on both means the entity or extractability work comes first. A blended number can't make that call; the split can.
